"Movement is my medicine, it's my meditation, my practice. It's what I do no matter how I feel.

We were all born to move, to surrender to the beat. Your soul is a dancer. No effort. No judgment. Pure energy in the moment.

I call my form of ecstatic dance the wave. It's a moving meditation and a great workout, using five basic rhythms that form a map to your innermost being. Moving through the wave is my spiritual practice.

The first rhythm, f l o w i n g, is fluid, circular, continuous motion with a focus on the inhale.

Flowing builds to s t a c c a t o — short, sharp, percussive — stops and starts, with a focus on the exhale.

Then c h a o s, the gateway to trance — wild, abandoned and free.

From here, we let go into the l y r i c a l rhythm, the heart of trance — airy, light and surrendered.

This energy dissolves in moving s t i l l n e s s, focusing on the inner dance, where each movement rises from the ocean of our being.

There is no right or wrong way to do this practice; there is only your way. And you will change from day to day if you are true to yourself. Some days, you may feel heavy or inert or depressed. So, get into it — do your heavy, inert or depressed dance. Move and breathe into these energies. Whatever you're feeling, surrender to it, get behind it, breathe into it and it will change.

Some rhythms may be more comfortable for you than others. Trust that each one is a teacher, a catalyst, a gateway to your soul.

You've got to find your personal style of doing the wave. Use the wave to move beyond self consciousness into your wild and mysterious free spirit.

Your breath is the key; not controlling, but letting it go. and, most importantly, listen to the beat.

So, relax, give yourself permission and have a good time. And remember:

If you don't do your dance, who will?"
